The iPhone is gracing every gift guide out there, include the Amish Times, but you really shouldn't ask for one or give one, really. There are a lot of legitimate reasons to wait—I'm not just being a Negative Nancy.
• The 3G iPhone is coming next year. And if you haven't compared EDGE speeds to 3G speeds, trust me, it is worth the wait.
• The iPhone SDK is coming in early 2008. You wouldn't want to mess up your iPhone getting overzealous installing unauthorized third-party apps that end up bricking the device.
• Wait and see what happens with Google's Android. The potential with Android and the Open Handset Alliance is endless and may out game the iPhone, while possibly being cheaper and more versatile.
• Just get an iPod Touch.
• If anything, just wait until the MacWorld Expo January 14-18. There will likely be some big news announced then that may convince you enough to want to wait.
• Regardless, be sure and buy Jason's damn book so he will stop bugging me.

I couldn't agree more. FAR better to wait, and save your hard earned cash for the amazing things that will surely come down the pike from Android, and even the next gen iPhone's. Better gadgets are a-comin'!
As soon as you buy one, the price is probably gonna drop $200 and you'll be screwed.
I agree. Further, to be extra safe, I would wait a few more years for the really good stuff.
For the average user whose phone contract is up, does it really make that much sense to wait? (And I'm going to assume that the person is actually interested in an iPhone, not someone who dislikes it for any of the number of reasons some people seem to react so negatively to it.)
Last I heard the 3G was rumored for mid/late summer? Even assuming those rumors are correct, that is actually a pretty decent waiting period.
If they are an average user and not unlocking/jailbreaking their phone, then they will already have their phone when the SDK comes, and be used to playing with it before deciding what else they need/want.
And for the person above, who is in the market for a new phone, the Touch isn't going to help.
Maybe I don't mind EDGE as much as the next person, but I would rather have a phone now instead of waiting 6-9 months.
More importantly, my parents or siblings, who probably couldn't even spell Gizmodo, would rather have a phone now.
And while Andriod may be the most compelling reason to wait, that seems to me to be the classic example of waiting and waiting for what might happen rather than enjoying what already is.
So maybe for many Giz readers it makes sense to wait, but for the average gift-getter, I'm not sure now makes any less sense than any other time.
I agree that better things are coming down the pipe. But if you just wait for the next best thing, you are condemned to perpetually waiting. There is ALWAYS going to be a new and better product just around the corner. If you want an iphone, or any piece of great technology for that matter, go get it.
"Sponsored by the Nokia N series" right next to this post. Also, too late, I just got one, I decided I'm within range of wireless most of the day so 3G I'm not too worried about 3G.
So is this real editorial, or just an advertisement for Nokia?
Im browsing/posting to giz from my iPhone while sitting in this clusterfuck known as traffic on I95 at the ny/ct border. Cruel irrelevant irony. People should learn to drive instead of blogging during a snow storm
This falls under the same rule of thumb I use for all electronics purchases. Buy it when you can not wait any longer because next month there will always be something better. If you will be upset that the price drops $200 in 67 days, then don't buy yet. But, if you can not wait any longer, then buy and be happy (and don't look back). This is true not just of the iPhone but of all gadgets.
well if thats the case don't get a zune 2 because zune 3 its coming nextyear and next year dont get it ether because zune 4 will follow. sometimes these writters make no sense at all.
@Fuzzba11: Word. I saw that it was sponsored by Nokia. Oh the love/hate relationship.
Here's why you shouldn't wait:
• "The 3G iPhone is coming next year", but not before the summer. A 3G data plan will cost you 2 to 3 times the price of EDGE.
• "The iPhone SDK is coming in early 2008". Any NEW iPhone owner that knows the SDK is coming wouldn't be stupid enough to brick their phone knowing legit apps are around the corner. The other folk that don't know what an SDK is wouldn't even know how to brick their phone.
• "Wait and see what happens with Google's Android". While you're at it, let's wait and see what happens with Windows Mobile 7 and their super duper multi touch interface. The first Android phone won't be here before Fall 2008.
• "Just get an iPod Touch". iPod Touch ain't a phone, duh!
• "If anything, just wait until the MacWorld Expo January 14-18". Remember the last MacWorld Expo? That's when they announced the first iPhone, it didn't get here until 6 months later.
There's always going to be something better coming but it will cost you. Once the SDK gets here, the iPhone will take on a whole new personality. The only hardware improvements over the existing iPhone will be a 16GB model and 3G capability. Everything else will be software based and most, if not all of these will be available to the current iPhone. So unless you're willing to pay the premium for the extra memory and additional monthly fees, then get on board now. I got mine and it's simply the best! I've owned a SE P990 and the HTC Wizard. The iPhone blows both of them away.

@ikstar:
yeah, im gonna hold off on getting any type of phone for at least twenty years. theyll be WAY better then. until then, ill rock out with my sweet pager.
right.
Wow, correct me if I'm wrong, but...
Most people who would buy a 3G Iphone, have already bought the Iphone with Edge.
Given 1.4 million Edge Iphone users already, you figure a huge number will still buy the 3G version anyway, and dump the Edge version.
-
The edge iphone Ebay secondary market is sure to be a buyer's market when the 3G version hits, and next year some of us can score a used 8gb iphone (currently ~ $1000) at less than the price of an 8gb ipod touch (currently ~$280-300?), with no annoying 2-3 year contract.
Wishful thinking?
rofl
yeah i'm sure android will be absolute perfection emerging from a half shell. all the reasons you cited to wait for the next iphone are moreso in waiting for ver 2.0 of android.
Jaizone, are they really going to charge 2-3x more for a 3G plan for an iphone?
I'm on AT&T with a PDA phone (AT&T Tilt), and the unlimited data plan is just one plan with the same cost for me ($40/month).
The use of Edge or 3G is just dependent on whether the phone has 3G (mine does), and whether there's 3G coverage where I'm walking/driving. My phone switches from 3G and Edge several times a day depending on where I am, it displays which I have in the upper left corner of the display.
Personally, I'm waiting for more storage. On the current iteration of the iPhone, I'd run out room after loading all of Def Leppard and Poison...
I have the phone and the touch. One in each pocket at the moment. Skip the touch, get the phone.
Don't like the low amount of minutes on the plan. T-Mobile is having a special right for 1500 whenever and unlimited nights/weekends for $50. I'm almost tempted to re-up (only have 6 months left)
if it's an ad for nokia, then it's not a very good one. nokia has 3G phones now, so you don't need to wait for anything.
Love my iPhone, and when the 3G hits, I'll definitely line up to get one!
There's tons of 3G phones out there that are loads better.
Ain't waiting! I'm not paying for it anyway, its XMAS, so it's no skin off my back to have a little instant gratification. I'd love to see someone asked for the iPhone be told "Gee, son . . we didn't get it because . . well . . just go to Gizmodo.com, they'll explain" . . . nah, ain't makin me feel better.
travis??? you're back?
@slingblade: name one which has speed enough to make up for the iPhone's UI, at this point, i don't think there is one....
Another one of my masterpieces straight out of Photoshop. Introducing the 3G iPhone!

Now with camera on front for video conferences! W00T!
Personally, I'd choose an iPhone over a Nokia any day, because Nokia's offerings suck hard when compared to iPhone. Nokia knows that's true, or they'd run an ad about their own products and why you should buy one. They've got nothing, so they pay Travis to throw some feces at Apple instead.
Nokia would do well to concentrate on making better products, but that's hard to do, and takes a lot of talent. Anybody can throw shit, however. It's much easier to toss some feces, spread some FUD, and settle for selling lame-ass mediocre phones.
Gizmodo seems to be for sale to the highest bidder these days, and placing the red "Advertisement" banner over what otherwise appears to be an article doesn't change that fact.
I'll probably be banned for writing this, but I really don't care. I used to respect Gizmodo as a source of decent gadget information, but this kind of shit is really hard to swallow.
Go fetch your ban hammer, Travis.
Get the phone that you need and want when you want it. I wouldn't wait six months for maybe 3G in a year from now. Just go try the thing out and if it floats your boat get it. Waiting is good to save money, but if you use a phone all the time and the interface of the one out now makes you heart pitter patter then take the plunge.
Life is short, and you might get hit by a bus tomorrow. You might fall overboard on a cruise during man eating whale mating season. You could lose your current phone in a divorce settlement when you shout to your wife that instead of getting breast enlargement, she should have gotten a vagina reduction.
Don't take the chance of drifting off into the afterlife without your Iphone if that's what you really want to have now. Do you really want to haunt the earth for thousands of years until judgment day, all because you decided to procrastinate? I didn't think so... Get it now if you want it, there could be an asteroid hurtling towards your house as we speak so snap out of it and get off the fence.
Live in the now! Just get one...sheesh.
Yeah, I'd kick myself if my phone was upgraded half a year from now. What was I thinking??!?!
I was in this very predicament. I want the phone now, but upgrades are right around the corner.
To satisfy my portable music till then I just bought a new battery for my 3rd gen iPod for 30 bucks.
I'm full of win right now.
