Belt drives are a lot like electronic shifting in that they're cool and new and will probably see widespread adoption because all the bike companies would love to sell you one...
But they're not nearly as repairable as conventional chains.

cable shift/braking systems aren't "rickety"; properly maintained they can outlast many of the other systems on a bike.
