The official policy is as long as you have an iPhone with ATT, you are required to have a contract. Example (which was emphasized over a year ago and is still in effect) - say you bought an iPhone last june when they came out - you agree upon a commitment for 24 months and are REQUIRED to have an iPhone data plan of at least $20 a month (not including voice), and say two years down the road you still want to use that same iPhone? more » [gizmodo]
