Sure, you could buy yourself earplugs or a vacation as a gift for that aspiring rockstar, but that is too selfish. It's time to embrace the bad music and if anything, help the kiddo out. M-Audio's MicroTrack II digital audio recorder could do that.
The recorder is the do-it-all for the musician. It has two-channel WAV and MP3 recording and playback. It supports CompactFlash for easy and quick storage. There are inputs out the wazoo and the software makes it easy to move the recordings to a computer. $299 may be a lot, but just think of the karma you will obtain that will pay itself back handsomely when that band really does get signed. I'd be down if it doubled as a USB external audio interface.
Don't believe the hype. I own this and the original MT-1 and the MT-2 sucks even worse than before.
It won't accept certain digital signals, and M-Audio hasn't responded to my or others problems. Wait for firmware revisions before buying.
It may not be feasible on a unit this size, but i'd like to see XLR connector(s) on this puppy.
There are better units by competitors in this category.
M-Audio preamps = HsSSSssssSSssssSSSSssssss....
No XLR inputs? Forget it. If you're going to spend $299 on a digital recording device you might as well buy the Samson Zoom H4, which sells for $280, has awesome built in stereo mics, dual XLR/ 1/4"TRS jacks and USB 2.0.

I do professional audio work (installing and maintaining audio gear for NYC Theaters) for a living and the H4 is worth its weight. It would be nice if it had S/PDIF, but really, any digital mixing setup now days is going to have a USB 2.0 port anyway.
i like the zoom h2. 4 channel surround. no xlr tho.
@johnnyabnormal: deja vu!
@Travis: $299 is not a lot for an audio recorder like this!!! Sony makes two little flash recorders; one is $2000, the other $500. (although they don't go HssSSSssssSSSSssssSSSss.....)
Your price reference for audio recorders is wacky wack.
@frigg: I know, huh?! HsssSSssss BooooOOooo!! Btw, are you in professional audio? Just curious. I score music and sound design for film/tv.
